چکیده
IN AN EARLIER REPORT from this laboratory,5 it was shown that although female hamsters from 1 through 25 months were reproductively active and capable of conceiving, during the latter half of this life period the sizes of the litters delivered were markedly reduced. It was further pointed out that in such senescent females, the number of ova released, fertilized, and implanted was not significantly reduced. The reduction in size of the litters delivered results from a process of resorption during the last 3-5 days of gestation. The possibility of supplementing the normal diet with various substances, including vitamins and/or hormones, was considered. The role of vitamin E has been investigated by many workers, starting with Evans and Burr in 1927, who showed that a vitamin E-free diet results in pregnancy failures in female rats and spermatogenic arrest in the males. In this article, the results of a study of the effect of wheat germ oilo on pregnancy in the hamster are presented.

متن کاملGolden hamsters are nocturnal in captivity but diurnal in nature.
Daily activity rhythms are nearly universal among animals and their specific pattern is an adaptation of each species to its ecological niche. Owing to the extremely consistent nocturnal patterns of activity shown by golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) in the laboratory, this species is a prime model for studying the mechanisms controlling circadian rhythms. In contrast to laboratory data, w...

Preimplantation embryo development was studied in the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus). Three groups of regularly cycling female hamsters were used: (I) 30 nulliparous young female (NYF) hamsters; (II) 24 nulliparous adult female (NAF) hamsters and (III) 30 multiparous adult female (MAF) hamsters. Female hamsters were mated with male hamsters of proven fertility. Only 15 min were allowed f...
